Sunscreen and brown skin: Let's talk about it. One of the biggest misconceptions in beauty is that if you have extra melanin in your skin, you don't need sunscreen. The melanin in our skin can do a lot of magical things, but protecting us from the sun is not one of them. As the absolute LAST step in your #ZynSkin routine, sunscreen has historically been an issue for people of color due to the white cast it leaves (and it is absolutely NOT cute).  To this day, skincare - including sunscreen, tailored to melanin skin tones is limited.  After testing dozens of options, here are our top 3 picks:

Not only does it have SPF 50 protection, but it’s completely reef-safe and free of oxybenzone—meaning it’s a great pick to throw in your beach bag.

Glossier Invisible Shield SPF 35

Applying a lotion sunscreen in the thick of summer might not sound appealing, which is why we’re thankful that gel formulas exist. Our favorite is this one from Glossier, which has an ultra lightweight consistency that goes on like a standard serum. Because of its texture, it applies completely clear, melts into the skin seamlessly, and doesn’t leave any residue or white cast. We appreciate that it protects against both UVA and UVB rays, and contains antioxidants to prevent signs of aging from environmental stressors.
